  • NOTE: SAT and GE Placemarks (Google Maps) are no longer being updated. Use each individual camp webpage for current locations of POW camps, usually noted as "Satellite map."
  • The Google Sightseeing SAT links listed below for each camp may not work if you have an ad blocker running. Links can be copied and pasted into a Google Map search, however, resulting in the pin-pointed location (e.g. 33.634533,130.427198 will bring up the Fukuoka #1 map).
  • B = Branch Camp (BUNSHO); D = Dispatch Camp (HAKENSHO) -- On the difference between the two: "A Bunsho means the camp was fed, clothed, administered and supervised directly by the army. A Hakensho means that the company the Prisoners worked for would provide the food, do the administration, provide guards, etc. The army would merely supervise. The company would be responsible for the welfare of the Prisoners. The original plan was to make all the camps into Hakensho. Eight were made when the army found that the plan was not feasible so the attempt was abandoned." (From "Testimony of Hiroyuki Morita," Demobilization Office, Osaka Camps, Dec. 1945)
  • Camp Group Jurisdictions: There is confusion regarding the designations for the POW Camp Groups (or Commands) due to the fact that the Japanese military redesignated the camp groups in April 1945, based on Army Districts. Hence:
    • Hakodate POW Camps - Camps within Tohoku (northeastern Japan) Army District transferred to new Sendai Group
    • Tokyo POW Camps - Camps within Tohoku (northeastern Japan) Army District transferred to new Sendai Group; camps within Hokuriku (northwestern Japan) Army Districttransferred to new Nagoya Group
    • Osaka POW Camps - Camps within Tokai (south central Japan) Army District transferred to new Nagoya Group
    • Zentsuji POW Camps - redesignated as new Hiroshima group
    • Fukuoka POW Camps - Camps within Chugoku (western Honshu) and Shikoku Army Districts transferred to new Hiroshima Group
  • Camp Designations in parenthesis are Japanese companies (click on link for old photos): DENKI or DENKA = Electric; TANKO or KOZAN = Mining; KOGYO = Industries or Mining; KOGYOSHO = Industries; KOUN = Shipping; SEIFUN = Flour Mill; SEITETSU or TEKKOJO or KOKAN = Steel Mill/Iron Works; UNSO or TSUUN = Transport; ZOSEN = Shipbuilding
  • Camp Designation names and numbers are linked to the main webpages elsewhere on this website (Allied POWs Under the Japanese) as well as other related sites.
  • Rosters are PDF compilations of original documents from the National Archives that are believed to be the finals (per submission date of Feb. 16, 1946); so far only the Fukuoka camp rosters are linked.
  • Photos are links to photographs taken of the camps by the U.S. Recovery Team in September 1945.
  • SAT = Satellite image at GoogleSightseeing.com showing present-day location.
  • Click on maps for each Camp Group for birds-eye view of all major POW camp locations. GE Placemarks = GoogleEarth Placemarks; click on link to bring up GoogleMaps. The KML files may be saved to disk or loaded into GoogleEarth. Download software here.)
  • For statistics on POW nationalities, military and civilian populations for each camp, including number of deaths, click on Strengths or see All-Japan POW Camp Group Statistics chart. For Asia POW camps & strengths, see Asia Pow Camp Group History and Asia Pow Camp Strengths. UPDATE! - Newly found data (2015), yet to be entered into Camp Strength tables:
  • Original documents obtained from the National Archives and Japanese company data, including camp profiles (J-PDF links) by Taeko Sasamoto (Japanese translation here), for whose work and assistance I am deeply indebted. For a very well-written document on POW camps, including information on every camp in Japan, see POW Camps in Japan Proper.
  • TOKYO BUNKA CAMP: This camp was not in the original document and has been added. The camp was, however, designated as "To-43" by SCAP when all of the Japan-controlled camps were catalogued (see Preliminary Japanese POW Camp List).
  • For more Japanese sites, see also the Meisai Ichiran Hyo for chart of camps and Coal Mining Photos at Kyushu University Museum (also here; monthly news; postcards). The Kozan Jigyosho List gives coal mine locations (past and current) for all of Japan and some international mine operations as well.
  • For civilian camps, see Civilian Internment Camps in Japan.
  • For more information and assistance in finding locations, please email webmaster Wes Injerd.
