History: 22 August 1943: Camp was established. Prisoners arrived as follows: 24 Aug 1943: 400 Americans from Shanghai (200 according to Marine John W Whipple) 5 Oct 1943: 12 Americans from Philippines 17 Oct 1943: 9 Americans & British from Formosa 5 Dec 1943: 385 Dutch from Java [reports Hawaii as the Hell ship] 26 Mar 1944: 34 American and Dutch from Philippines (US men ex Kenwa Maru) 8 April 1944: Drs Berley & Glusman depart- Glusman goes to Wakayama (previously all Brit camp with 3 Aussies)- ex Hong Kong 250 British from Thailand - date of arrival unknown 15 May 1945: All POWS transferred to Tokyo POW camp, Naoetsu (see roster below) 11 May 1945: Camp closed [should read 16 May] Camp was again used on a temporary basis after Osaka Main camp was destroyed: (1 Jun 1945) 1 Jun 1945: Destroyed by air raid; moved temporarily to TSUMORI Jul 1945: Moved to NISHINO-machi Aug 1945: Renamed Osaka 1-B Sep 1945: Rescue effected Camp Commanders: 11 Sep 1943 - 7 Dec 1944: 1st Lt Syuntaro Habe 7 Dec 1944 - 16 May 1945: 1st Lt Tashio Mari |

Casualty Branch Records relating to Japanese war crimes involving POWs BOX 1 Affidavit states incident was at Osaka Camp #13 [actual camp was Yodogawa which was Osaka Camp #3] Testimony of PFC Raymond Baggett, 280323, St Louis, MO Jap CO= Col. Mori? Guard: Okamatsu aka “Beast of Burden” Baggett states he saw Chief commissary Steward Virgil Byrd [USS Quail] beaten to death, 11 May 1943. Byrd was beaten unconscious 3 times, revived and beaten again. Kicked each time he fell unconscious... finally kicked to death. Crime? Sold extra pair of shoes to a Japanese workman. Baggett arrived at Yodogawa on 26 Nov 1942- [ex Niigata Maru] and departed 16 April 1945 for “Camp Ouiama” [Oeyama]. Baggett remained there until end of war.
