Mrs. Victoria Lilly, November 16, 1942 820 Hay St., Fayetteville, North Carolina:

My dearest Victoria: To be able to write a letter to you is indeed a privilege. I am informed by Japanese authorities that we will be allowed to write more letters and you may be sure that I will write as often as I can, although as you are well aware, There are a number of things I should like to tell you which for military reasons are not permitted. For example I cannot tell you where I am or mention the names of any other prisoners of war. A few days ago we were permitted to prepare radio messages which we were told would be broadcast orally by short wave from somewhere in Japan. My message, limited to 100 words was as follows: "Glad to have this chance to send you a message. I am safe and well, so do not worry. Know you are taking good care of my babies. Please take care of your dear self. Am in a beautiful place with wonderful climate. Am expecting letters sent care of Information Section, Prisoners of War, Tokyo, through International Red Cross, Geneva. Keep in touch with Frances. If possible, send package with powdered milk, candy and tobacco. I will write in few days. Love to Betty Ann, Teddy, Tori, Mother, Frances, and to you my dearest" I now weigh about 132 pounds and am quite well. A package will be appreciated when you can send one. I need concentrated foods. In addition to the things I listed I should also like to have one or two desks of cards, preferably celluloid, which will last longer. You have probably kept in touch with Washington and can get information about packages from that source. The last letter from you was received in late November 1941, and your radiogram acknowledging receipt of package came to me in the field about the middle of last December. Did little Tori receive the cribbage board and deck of cards I sent her? I am using the Fayetteville address because I thought, under the circumstances, your Atlanta address might vary – and Frances will always know where to forward mail to you. I am worried about your health and find myself wondering if you are taking proper care of yourself. I hope you have seen Dr. Duncan and followed his advice. If not I implore you to do so. I wrote to you last March and had reasonable assurance that my letter would get off on a submarine. I hope you got it. I trust that my allotments have reached you and that you have tried to save something each month in case of emergency. Here is the schedule of my allotments. Any variation should be taken up with the Chief of Finance, U.S. Army, Washington. Just before outbreak of hostilities I received a radiogram from Washington confirming a $350.00 allotment to you. Later I found I could allot more, so increased this to $395.94 out of my Feb ’42 pay, which should have begun on March 1st. Then when I was promoted to full colonel on Feb 20 ’42 I increased it again to $435.00 beginning out of my March ’42 pay, which should have begun on April 1, 1942. If payments have not followed this schedule you should write to the Chief of Finance, US Army, Washington. By the way, you will be glad to hear that I commanded the 57th Inf from Jan 30 to the end. We had a fine record and the scouts proved themselves real fighters. The last letter I received from you came during the later part of November, ’41. I hope Mother is well. Naturally, I thought of her on Nov 10 – and Helen on the 11th – Give them both my love. Hope Helen has gotten her affairs in order and is living along more conventional lines now. Hope you have not been forced to double up with her. You and the children are constantly in my thoughts. Hope B.A. has been having a nice year at Athens and managed to do some work as well as have a good time. Did she get to West Point last Xmas? – and who is he o. & o. now? Tell Teddy I am counting on him to take care of my girls in my absence. I know he is a fine big boy now & a great help to you. Tell him I have not forgotten our agreement & have been trying my best to live up to my part of it. As for the "baby" I have been trying to visualize her progress with her music. The other night I heard several phonograph records by some well known pianist and it made my arms ache to take little Tori and give her a big hug. I have executed a letter granting you Power of Attorney which you may not need to use, but it will be a protection for you if you need it. Hope the car is running all right. Since it is in my name, it will take something like this Power of Attorney to give you complete control (which, of course, I want you to have). It also includes several other things as you will see. Do not surrender it to anyone. If necessary have one or more photostatic copies made. This could be done at small cost.
