Edwin McCaulley per John Powers: Major Edwin McCaulley is listed
as part of the unit at Peking, however, the roster is noted to be of
the men captured that day. McCaulley was never captured. Howie
Chittenden and the others I knew were very clear on that point.
McCaulley was never to be listed as a POW.
He had served in Peking earlier and came back to retire. He owned racing horses and was part of the social scene involving senior politicians and military officers. He was recalled to active duty to serve as the Quartermaster at the embassy as the staff there was being cut back in 1940 and 1941. McCaulley was never held prisoner. After the initial surrender he was allowed to immediately return to his home. He later was rounded up with all other foreign nationals and interned. His name appears on the roster of the Weihsien civilian internment camp in 1943. He appears on the roster of the exchange ship Tera Maru in September 1943. Though he was part of the unit on 8 Dec 1941, he was never held as a military prisoner of war. Considered a retired officer by the Japanese, he was interned in the Weihsien civilian camp from Mar 1943 to September 1943. At that time he was repatriated to the US. James McBrayer (Escape!) was a lieutenant at the time. He writes about McCaulley being released from Woosung shortly after their arrival there on 1 Feb 1942. Chester Biggs (Behind the Barbed Wire) does the best job of all those who wrote about the North China Marine experience in terms of supplying chapter notes, a bibliography, and an index. He says McCaulley left the group in Tientsin just before the move to Woosung. |
